THE SALTY SOURCE DRIVE
Saturday 20 April 2024
The car run for April was organised by Helen Pitt and Mark Harkins. It was entitled ‘The Salty Source Drive’, whose meaning became apparent at the end of the car run…more of the ‘meaning’ later. The car run explored a section of the Southeast of the island, which we seldom get to do, going in the direction of Cala D’or and Santanyi.

We were instructed to meet at the car park of the Rock Bar restaurant Los Ultimos Mohicanos, which is close to Algaida. There was a wonderful variety of cars totalling 25 that took part and 46 people attended the venue and were welcomed by glorious sunshine, enabling many cars to have their sunroofs down.

We were given our detailed directions and instructions and set off shortly after 11.00am and headed in the direction of Algaida. From Algaida we took the Ma-5010 to Randa and from there we headed North in the direction of Montuiri on the Ma-5017. From there we then headed South to Porreres, eventually picking up the Ma-5040 taking us to Campos. We then headed east for Felanitx and from there we picked up the Ma-14, the Ma-4016 and the Ma-4013 heading south in the direction of Cal D’0r. We drove along the coast heading to Porto Petro, picking up the Ma-19 to Santanyi and from there on the Ma-6100 to our destination at Es Lombards.

It was a glorious car run that took us on driveable roads that showed us the true splendour of the Southeast part of the island, close to the Parc Natural de Mondrago. Throughout the run the warm sun was shining, which made the experience of absorbing everything even more enjoyable.

Once in Es Lombards we made our way to the Séra restaurant, where we had a fabulous three course lunch. The food was of a high standard and the service was exceptional. It was clear from the comments afterwards that everyone enjoyed the day and had a great time.

To determine the winners, Helen had asked several questions, which were staged along the route, that required co-pilots to have keen eyes, as they were required to identify signs and provide information about local companies. There was a tie for first place, so Helen asked a tie break question to find the first and second place winners. The eventual winners were Andreas & Manuela Botas, and second place were Frank Krüger & Laura. There were five cars in third place, so another tie break question was asked. The third-place winners were Arne & Susan Sødal.

One of the questions asked was: Which islands in the Balearics produce salt? In Mallorca Ses Salines close by to the restaurant is the source of prized production of salt and literally means “source of salt” hence the ‘Salty Source’ title for the car run and the question. The answer to the question was: Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca.

A big thank you to Helen and Mark for staging a memorable and enjoyable car run. Also, thank you to Helen again for handling all the administration of the car run, which, as always, enabled everything to run smoothly.
