The Late Spring Car Run
26 April 2025

This month's car run, organized by Stan Hunter, was called "The Late Spring Car Run." It was one of the best-attended Car Runs, with 66 people and 33 cars participating. It was also the Car Club’s AGM, which attracted other members who were not driving, but came for the meeting. This increased the number of people who were at the AGM meeting to 72 people!

The AGM meeting took place at Esment, Café Palmanova, which has become the usual venue for this annual event. Coffee and croissants were provided, and the meeting started at around 10:25 AM. The minutes, accounts, and the President's report were all approved, followed by a discussion about new committee members taking over in October. It was mentioned that an Extraordinary General Meeting would be held at the end of October, where the new committee would introduce themselves and explain their strategy.

The AGM meeting concluded at 10:55 AM, and shortly after, members dispersed and started the car run. For a short while, it looked like it might rain, but soon the dark clouds disappeared, and the sun shone, making it a warm and pleasant day for the drive. There were some interesting and special cars taking part, most notably two AC Cobras, which was very unusual. We had seven Mercedes, six Porsches, and a range of other specialist classic cars, including a Morgan Plus 8, several MGs, and a Ford Thunderbird.

The Car Run directed the cars to Calvia on the Ma-1015 and from there onto the Ma-1016 heading for Puigpunyent. The cars then drove along the old military road, the Ma-1043, and from there onto the Ma-20 to Bendinat, where a coffee stop was included at the Bendinat Urban Country Club. From there, the route took everyone along the coast road through Portals Nous, Palmanova, and onto Port Adriano. The final stretch of the route took the cars onto the Ma-1, heading for Port Andratx and the end destination, the Club de Vela Restaurant.

The route was just 60 kms (37 miles), but it had some challenging stretches, chiefly the Ma-1043 (military road). However, because the weather was warm and sunny, the cars could drive with their roofs off and take in some stunning scenery. Everyone agreed it was an enjoyable drive.

At the end of the Car Run, the Port authority in Andratx kindly allowed us to park in a newly formed parking area on the superyacht quay, which was very close to the Club de Vela restaurant, which was much appreciated by everyone.

The Club de Vela restaurant laid on a spectacular three-course lunch with unlimited wine, beer, and soft drinks. The food and service were excellent, and the setting, right on the frontage of the port, provided a stunning backdrop for the lunch. A big thank you to Robert and Jane Klevenhagen for organizing this venue; their connections with the owner and the Port made it more special than it might otherwise have been.

A series of questions relating to missing words on signs were asked along the route, and the members who answered all of them correctly were Paddy (Patrick) Harrison and Louise Newby, due in part to their local knowledge of signs in Calvia, as there was a mistake in the route instructions that nobody else picked up! Congratulations to them and to the second-place winners, Robert and Jane Klevenhagen, and the third-place winners, Stefan and Christin Wulff.
