The inaugural Big Route 66 Run took place in stunning weather on Sunday 30 October 2016.
24 classic cars and 63 people met at Festival Park at 10.30am for coffee and croissants. The road books were given out and teams briefed before the cars departed at intervals from 11am.
Given the theme of the rally, participants had to find five route 66 signs laid out along the course. There were different colour lollipops at each location. The idea was to take one lollipop from each place and points were awarded for each colour. However no one knew which colour was worth the most points…
In addition there was a 66 road marker to find and identify and a bunch of general knowledge questions about route 66 in the USA, plus a couple of American car name questions. Mr Google came in very handy for these!
The 63 Km route took the cars through Bunyola before entering the tunnel at Soller and then on to the lovely coast road heading south west. The scenery along this stretch of road is spectacular and dramatic, with the sea a pretty blue and very calm.
From the outskirts of Valldemosa, the route took us through Puigpunyent and Galilea and then on to Es Capdella to finish at the wonderful Hotel Castel Son Claret. All the cars were lined up along the front of the hotel. A great photo opportunity as you can see.
The restaurant laid on a gorgeous three course lunch on the warm and sunny terrace. The service and food were spectacular and every one commented on what a lovely day they had.
The winner with the highest scoring orange lollipops and only one question wrong was Gordon Cox in his Lotus Elan with co-driver Mark. Second place went to Jean Pierre Allemann in his Austin Healey and third place to Pedro Vicente in his silver Tatra.
A big thanks to all who took part and we look forward to seeing you all at the next event.
